Follow the pulse
On a first listen, pay attention to the steady pulse and the sounds that play around it. On another listen, follow a different rhythmic part. You may notice how a small repeated pattern changes the way the whole song feels.
Notice the space
A groove is shaped by pauses as well as sounds. Listen for places where the voice holds back or an instrument leaves room for another part. Those gaps can make the next phrase feel more alive.
Hear the voice as rhythm
The way a singer places words can support, answer or contrast with the beat. Hum a phrase and tap along. Listening this way reveals how melody and rhythm share the work of making a song move.
