Telling Your Story Through Music

Honest details can turn a personal experience into a song that connects.

Begin with a scene

Instead of naming an emotion immediately, describe a place, an object or a small action connected to it. A listener can enter the song through an image before hearing the explanation.

Choose your boundaries

Writing honestly does not require sharing everything. You can change identifying details, combine moments or leave a story unfinished. Decide which parts you want to make public before you share a song.

Let the listener take part

A lyric can be specific while leaving room for other people’s experiences. Read it back and ask whether the story is clear enough to follow and open enough to feel.
